I asked my son how he wanted to celebrate his eighth birthday.
“Two words Mom…Ziggy Marley."
I know, he aims high, but I’ve got to give it to him – the boy knows how to celebrate.
He got it honest.
I had to make it happen – after all, the kid has only been requesting to see Ziggy Marley in concert for the last three years. The pressure was on!
Taj adores Ziggy – all of his brothers, his mother and father too! Not only does he appreciate the music, but he looks up to them in the biggest way. Ziggy plays a very vital role as a member of the Board of Directors for a non profit organization, Little Kids Rock. It provides free musical instruments and free lessons to youth throughout the U.S.
As you know, my little Taj is a blossoming musician and when he heard of this philanthropic role that Ziggy was playing to share the joy of music with little kids all over the country, he was much moved. He told me that he would do the same when he grew up and share the music all over the world. With his strong admiration of ZIggy’s character and fondness of the Marley music, this was one Birthday wish that had to come true.
Fortunately with a tour date in Tampa - only twenty one days after his birthday, it was not too difficult to pull this one off. I told him we would have to wait 21 days until we celebrated – he said, “It is worth the wait. I will be patient, I promise.” Taj was so thrilled when I showed him the tickets, and I must say e has been very patient for the last 21 days.
“This is going to be the best Birthday ever!” Taj said to me. He even wrote me a thank you note/song to show his appreciation.

Maybe I am biased, but I thought it was kind of great for a kid turning eight. He is growing and so is his beautiful soul. I was so appreciative of his delight in such a simple – yet meaningful Birthday wish. I had that moment that we all have as mothers when are boys are growing up – you know the one when you feel like you must be doing something right. It made my heart smile.
We are both joyfully looking forward to the show tonight. It will be a night to remember - that is for sure.
